Have you ever wanted to be a superhero or perhaps something more in the lines of a supervillain? Not many games provide the chance of fight alongside legendary superheroes like Superman, Batman or Wonderwoman trying to stop evildoers. DC Universe Online, published by Sony Online Entertainment provides you with that unique opportunity.
You start off as the new superhero (or supervillain) on the block, learning the basics of fighting and learning to otherwise control your powers. Working your way up, trying to get better at what you do and most importantly, trying to get noticed by the right people. After some time, you will be able to get your very own secret lair from which you can plot out your heroic or villainous fantasies. The story takes place in familiar comic book locations like Metropolis and Gotham City.
This game offers massive amounts of character customization, from your visual appearance to powers and fighting style. In the creation you can also choose your movement mode (either Superspeed, Acrobatics or Flight). While choosing your powers, you have to choose one out of 9 powers that you want to use. You can choose between Fire, Ice, Earth, Electricity, Mental, Nature, Sorcery, Gadgets, and Light. However, if you want to select Light, Earth or Electricity, you have to purchase a membership.
After all that it’s time to choose whether you’re going to be a hero or a villain, if you’ve made up your mind about that, it’s time to select your mentor. Choosing a mentor determines the starting city of your newfound hero (or villain). Hero’s can choose between Superman, Batman and Wonderwoman as their mentor while villains can choose between The Joker, Lex Luthor, or Circe. Needless to say, customization can take up a long time in this game, so if you can’t wait to try out the game, you can choose “inspired by” to get a “familiar” superhero or a villain (if you choose that you can still edit any detail you want about them).
DC Universe Online was developed for both the PC and the PS3, that’s why the gameplay might feel a bit weird if you’re not using a controller. At first it might the controls might feel strange, for example, you have to hold down the “E” key to talk to NPC’s and otherwise interact with the world. That’s because left click is bound to melee attack and right click to ranged attack, however, all skills are still bound to the number keys. After you get used to that, other gaming controls are pretty intuitive and easy to remember.
Another great thing about this game is the huge visual customization you can do after you’ve created your character. Each piece equipment you’ve ever picked up will be stored in your “style menu”. You can use the items at any time later in game for their cosmetic appearance.
In addition to all that, this game has many activities you can do other than completing quests or fighting other people in PvP. This game also contains races, hidden tokens and other little things like that. Don’t get too comfortable though, because you have to be on your guard at all times, or someone might kill you in open world PvP.
All-in-all DC Universe Online is a great game to play. It’s not just another superhero game where you can fight evil villains and kill their minions. The game offers you a unique chance of fighting alongside your favourite superhero or a supervillain in your favourite comic book city. You can feel your character constantly developing, not only in costumes, skills or abilities, but beyond that. DC Universe Online is definitely worth checking out if you’ve ever dreamed about being something more.
