Yesterday CCP Games (the company behind EVE Online and Dust) announced that they’ve cancelled the World of Darkness MMOG project, that’s been in creative development for over 18 years.
Due to the game cancellation, 56 employees of the Atlanta studio have lost their jobs. Some of the former employees have been offered roles on other projects inside the company, but not everyone. CCP has provided severance packages and job placement assistance for those affected
CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said that the decision to end World of Darkness was one of the hardest he has ever had to make. He continued that he loved and valued the idea of a sandbox experience set in the dark, vampire-horror-themed world.
Pétursson continued with an apology to the current and former employees as well as the fans of the game that will never be.
Although this was a tough decision that affects everyone in the company, Pétursson thinks that uniting the company behind the EVE Universe will put them in a stronger position moving forward, and make them more committed than ever to solidify EVE as the biggest gaming universe in the world.
