Warframe is a free to play MMOTPS. Unlike most Third Person Shooters, Warframe is a Co-Op game, which means that players can join eachother in battles but never fight against each other (kind of like Left4Dead).
The game starts when the player wakes up as a Tenno. Tennos are the descendants of an ancient and mystical civilization of lost warriors from the Orokin era on Earth. Following a great war, the surviving Tenno were preserved in cryopods for centuries. The Tenno now awaken to a new war, fighting and resisting warring factions as the sole bearers of the Orokin-created Warframes, which give them powerful abilities in combat.
The game has great graphics, beautiful environment and the animations make you feel as though you’re really part of the action.
After players finish the basic game tutorial, they’ll get to choose their first warframe. The initial selection is between 3 basic warframes: Exaclibur, Loki and Mag. Excalibur is the most basic warframe which is perfect for beginners. Excalibur allows players to explore the power of warframes with a balanced set of capabilities. Loki is a more advanced warframe which offers a variety of powers to manipulate the battlefield. Mag is the perfect warframe for players who love to deal heavy damage in unconventional ways.
Later in game players will be able to purchase additional Warframes from the market or unlock a project for the foundry and create one themselves.
The game tries to offer an alternative to the typical lobby style that can be seen in so many games. Although the idea is nice and the look is great, the new system doesn’t offer much informatuion. If you’re selecting a mission, you have to click around a lot to find the perfect missions for your level range. Another drawback is that you won’t know the levels of your allies until you join the game (unless you create a private game with your friends). Also the game doesn’t show ping for the games you’re about to join so you might end up with unplayable lag.
You can also choose to play the game solo, which means that other players won’t be able to join your game. Since the game isn’t well-balanced for solo, you’ll always run the risk of starting a mission that’s impossible to complete.
Although the game lacks a real storyline, it offers a good variety of weapons and cool powers. One of the great things about Warframe is the fast and chaotic gameplay. Players can also choose to try and complete missions without being detected, but that’s extremely hard, especially when you’re playing with other people.
Whether it’s a defense mission where you’ll have to protect a cryopod or it’s a rescue mission where you have to break someone out from jail, you can always count on there being a lot of enemies for you to kill. Even better, there are a lot of weapons you can choose from for your missions.
As you play more, you level up your warframe and weapons. There are 3 types of weapons, main weapons (assault rifle, shotgun, bow, etc), secondary weapons (different handguns, kunai etc.) and melee weapons (different kind of swords and axes).
Weapons and warframes can also be upgraded with different mods and found while doing missions. Weapon mods include powers like increased crit. chance, increased mag size, increased armor penetration, etc.
The game also offers some cool powers, unique to different warframes. The powers lack a system though they cost a certain amount of points but it doesn’t matter which power you choose to equip (Powers can be switched between battles). All the powers can be unlocked and equipped in the early stages of the game, which eliminates the excitement of gaining new abilities later on in the game.
The game has a sort of “crafting” system called the forge. Players are able to create their own weapons and warframes if they have the right blueprints. Blueprints can be gained during different missions. They’re usually dropped by boss monsters.
Alongside the 3 main warframes, the game also has additional unlockable warframes. Those warframes include Rhino, Volt, Ember, Ash, Trinity, Frost, Nyx, Saryn, Banshee and Vauban.
Rhino is the heaviest of all the warframes. His strength enables him to combine a mix of devastating offensive attacks with formidable defensive powers.
Volt can create and harness electrical elements. This is a high-damage Warframe perfect for players who want a potent alternative to gun-play.
Ember is a nightmare for light-armored targets. Ember can super-heat the air which opens up surprising crowd-control possibilities.
Ash is great for players looking for a more stealthy approach to combat. Lethal abilities are complemented by powers of distraction.
Trinity is great for players who prefer a supportive role. Warframes with healing technologies are rare making Trinity a great equalizer when the odds are stacked against the Tenno.
Frost creates formidable defenses and lethal attacks from sub zero conditions by channeling moisture and vapor in the surrounding environment.
Nyx is a very dangerous foe especially because of her mind control and psychic attacks. Her ability to reach into enemy consciousness and manipulate their behavior can turn the tide of any battle.
Saryn venomous attacks are horrifyingly effective against organic and synthetic enemies, and her ability to “shed” her skin makes her very elusive.
Banshee uses sonic attacks and acoustic target detection, this warframe is well suited for stealth gameplay and is capable of filling both attack, and support roles.
Vauban uses his powers to create deadly traps that can zap, imprison and dimensionally crush enemies.
Pretty much everything that you can find in the cashshop can be gained in the game. Although the cashshop enables players to buy “pets” that stun your enemies and other items that make you stronger, it doesn’t feel that unfair since you’re playing a PvE game. Among other things, cashshop offers XP boosts, Credit boosts and additional Warframe slots which can’t be obtained any other way.
Above all else, Warframe can boast with great graphics and animations. The game also has an excellent combat system which make the repetitive battles fun to play. Although the game has some shortcoming, it’s clear that it can become so much more with only a little bit of work.
