Steam has promised to reveal 3 big news this week. On Monday they announced the SteamOS a new operating system based on Linux technology. This was their first step in their bigger plan of bringing Steam to the living room.
Recently Steam made their second announcement- the Steam Machines – A powerful new category of living-room hardware. Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. Steam wants people to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for them, so steam is working with multiple partners to bring a variety of the Steam Machines to market during 2014. All of the machines will be running SteamOS.
To ensure that the right products are getting made, steam is shipping 300 of these boxes to Steam users, free of charge, for testing. Everyone can participate in the beta by completing the beta eligibility quest.
How to participate:
Before October 25, log in to Steam and then visit your quest page to track your current status towards beta test eligibility.
- Join the Steam Universe community group
- Agree to the Steam Hardware Beta Terms and Conditions
- Make 10 Steam friends (if you haven’t already)
- Create a public Steam Community profile (if you haven’t already)

On October 25th, the list will be locked. So complete the quest before then!
About 30 (or less) of the beta participants will be chosen based on their past community contributions. The rest of them (270) will be chosen at random.
The Steam Machines will come on sale in the Beginning of 2014, there will be multiple SteamOS machines to choose from, made by different manufacturers.
