Star Wars: The Old Republic is a sci-fi MMORPG by BioWare. The game launched in December 2011 as a subscription-based game. In February 2012, the game peaked with 1.7 million subscribers, but after falling below 1 million subscribers only 5 months later, it was clear that something drastic had to be done to keep the game from dying.
Soon Electronic Arts came up with the perfect solution. They decided to make the game free-to-play while keeping the subscription option, ending up with a hybrid of the two very different models.
On November 15, 2012 the free-to-play option finally arrived. Since the release of the Free-to-play option, the game has added more than 1,7 million new players and has more than doubled their revenue. The main reason for the increased revenue would be the restrictive F2P model, which tempts players to buy small “conveniences”.
