SMITE is a MOBA that, in my opinion, doesn’t get enough recognition for how unique and innovative it is. It’s a very simple concept, really: take a popular genre (MOBA), and offer it in a completely different perspective. It’s similar to what Gears of War did upon its release: First-Person Shooters were extremely popular, and Gears simply offered the style in third-person. I wouldn’t say SMITE is the best MOBA out there, but it’s a different experience and a breath of fresh air in a genre that is quickly becoming very crowded. And perhaps the coolest thing about SMITE is how it uses preexisting legends to make its characters. Ancient Gods and Heroes are very iconic and easy to get on board with, especially with a little help from the movies. Thor, Odin, and Loki are very popular in pop culture at the moment, and getting to play as one of them in a MOBA is an awesome feeling. The most recent addition to the Godly mayhem is Ah Muzen Cab, the Mayan God of bees.
Ah Muzen Cab is a utlity based, physical damage caster who focuses on debilitating his enemies while allowing his teammates and swarms of bees to destroy his victims over time. He can create Hives that give him bonus movement and attack speed, allowing him to chase down and harass enemies, while gaining a slight bit of healing as well. His Honey allows him to slow enemies down and direct his bees towards a specific target with Swarm, a devastating ability that deals a flat amount of damage and applies Ah Muzen Cab’s passive, dealing more damage over time and revealing affected units on the minimap. Ah Muzen Cab’s ultimate is Stinger, a skill-shot nuke that deals massive damage to a target and cripples them for three seconds. If the target dies or manages to lose the stinger (either by cleansing or waiting out the duration), the Stinger falls to the ground, giving Ah Muzen Cab four seconds to pick it up and gain 80% reduction to Stinger’s cooldown. Along with Ah Muzen Cab’s release comes a patch loaded with tweaks and changes to the game, including a complete visual overhaul to the Assault map, Asgard.
